Kim Lee has been granted a divorce by a Beijing court after posting photos of abuse at the hands of her husband online. Lee posted the graphic photos on her microblog in 2011 after her husband, entrepreneur Li Yang, assaulted her and left her with bruised knees, a bruised forehead and a bleeding ear.
The incident sparked an outcry in China which made rounds on talk shows and the internet. Yang is the owner of “Crazy English”, a chain of English-teaching schools in his home country. His success has made his name as well as his wife’s well-known. However, the two became more prominent after it was revealed that they’d been involved in an abusive marriage. The topic of domestic abuse is taboo in China as private life in the nation tends to remain so.
The court granted Lee a divorce on Sunday, February 3rd as well as a three month long restraining order against her ex-husband. Lee was also granted $8,000 in mental anguish compensation, custody of her and Ying’s three children and property worth over two million dollars.
Divorce in China is a hot-topic issue due to the nation having a strong stance on marriage as well as the public turning a cold should toward women in abusive relationships.
