The study was published online in the journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking.
“Twitter-related Conflicts”
The study surveyed almost 600 Twitter users of varying ages. In order to gauge “active Twitter use,” users provided answers to questions detailing how often they used the social networking site to tweet and reply to tweets. Scrolling through timelines or direct messaging other users was also explored. Researchers found that couples who engaged in frequent Twitter use were more likely to have “Twitter-related conflicts” with their spouses, which opened the possibility to divorce.
A previous analysis was conducted which took into account Facebook usage. Data resulting from that study showed that conflicts related to the other social media giant placed relationships less than three years in length in jeopardy. For Twitter, conflicts were found to be a possibility no matter the duration of the relationship.
Skewed Results?
The survey which gathered the data was promoted via the Twitter accounts of The Huffington Post and the study’s researcher. The sample sized used for the study was skewed towards those who followed both accounts. Also, participants were aware of the study’s subject matter when answering questions. Due to these factors, the findings are limited.
