A survey conducted by the lifestyle website YourTango.com discovered that the most common factor leading to divorce is communication, or lack thereof. The poll gathered information from 100 mental health professionals which concluded that 65 percent of relationship problems were communication-related. A couple’s inability to resolve conflict came in second at 43 percent.
The survey also revealed information about the types of communication complaints men and women have. According to 70 percent of experts, men cited “nagging and complaining” as the main communication problem in their marriage. Eighty-six percent of experts claimed the most frequent complaint for women was due to their spouse not listening or acknowledging their opinions and feelings enough.
Plenty of significant research has been conducted on the topic of communication and its role in a relationship. It is typically the leading cause of divorce. Professor John Gottman of the University of Washington, who has studied couple behavior for 40 years, suggested four categories of communication problems which can lead to divorce:
- Criticism of a partners’ personality
- Contempt
- Defensiveness
- Stonewalling
