The decision to tie the knot is a momentous one for every couple. Joining a beloved partner in matrimony is the zenith of every relationship. What makes a stable marriage? Ideally, you want to stay with your partner for the rest of your life, but how do you ensure that? A recent study has shown that, surprisingly, couples who marry in their late 20s actually face lower rates of divorce compared to those who marry in their 30s.
Divorce is difficult to navigate regardless of age. Let us help you find your way.
Unexpected Results
The data is interesting given that many people would assume couples marrying in their 20s would be the ones facing higher rates of divorce. Reasons for this can range from lack of financial stability, lack of emotional security and the general unstableness of life in your 20s.
The study reveals that couples who wait to marry until their early 30s face odds of divorce by 5% every year. By looking at statistics from the National Survey of Family Growth from 2006 to 2010, data began to show that each age below 32 lowered the odds of divorce by 11%.
Interpreting Data
The results were adjusted to account for differing social and demographical backgrounds. Factors like education, race, religion, sexual history and size of city were taken into account and the trend held true: if you marry in your 20s, you face a lower chance of divorce compared to marrying in your 30s.
The reason for the trend could theoretically be attributed to a variety of factors, but there’s no definitive reason for the recent trend. Perhaps couples in their 20s marry more for love while couples in their 30s wait for financial security. It’s also possible that remaining single later in life has lost some of its stigma.
